SEL1855 – Sony 18-55mm Lens Review for Sony NEX Camera
The SEL1855 is a lightweight interchangeable lens from Sony. the lens has manual, autofocus as well as silent auto focusing feature which makes it a unique model. it is a standard lens for Sony NEX camera and it offers 18-55mm zoom range. the optical quality on this lens is impressive and therefore, you do not have to change it each time a new model is introduced in the market. it also has reduced chromatic aberration so it is able to produce very sharp images.
The light fall off on the edges and corners of the SEL1855 is insignificant which is impressive for standard lenses. it measures 2200 LW/PH on the border and 2950 LW/PH on the center. this is an impressive sharpness which allows you to get clear images. most of the lenses which are found in the market do not get even close to 2000 LW/PH. there are some mild distortions with the lens and you may notice some bulges on the pictures but this is not a concern considering the fact that it is an 18-55mm zoom lens. after the 18mm, you will not notice any distortions on the pictures produced by the lens.
The build quality on the SEL1855 is also good. the lens is made of magnesium alloy. this is a very lightweight and hard metal lens and therefore the lens will last a long time without wearing out. Apart from being strong, the material also looks good compared to the plastic options that are available in the market. it is one of the smallest lenses in the market so it can be used in small cameras.
The small size of the SEL1855 makes it difficult to handle especially if you have large hands but this does not affect the quality of the pictures that you get. If you find it difficult to handle the lens, you can simply use a lens hood to get a better handling.
Most people do not like using the autofocus feature to change focus on pictures but this should not be a problem when you are using the SEL1855. the lens comes with an inbuilt contrast detection autofocus. it is silent and fast even when you set the camera to movie mode.
The focus and zoom rings on the SEL1855 are extremely wide and well ridged so it is easy to use them. You will find it very easy to turn them and this is impressive considering how difficult it is to change focus and zoom in some lenses. the caps and filters on the SEL1855 lens are affordable and you can get them easily everywhere.
